OMG Cheryl, this story unlocked a long-forgotten memory of whatever the inverse is of a band selling out: Do you recall when Ween was asked to write a new jingle for Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust pizza? It went exactly as you might expect.

Wow I do not recall this but I’m very happy I know now, and that I got to listen to “Where’d the cheese go”

Corporate endorsements are virtually the norm now but that was once certain death from your fanbase. Look at Del Fuegos and Miller beer back in '85 i think? They were dragged through the mud for doing a very lo-fi commercial and their careers were over. Apparently Miller kept playing it over and over at a festival the Del Fuegos were playing at and they had to hide from the enraged crowd. Very different these days!

Ok wow I had TOTALLY forgotten about that! Times have definitely changed. They should attempt a comeback. Justice for the Del Fuegos!

The Slayer x Igloo collab is a perfect lens to look at the "Selling Out" concept. It's interesting to see how what was once considered taboo and uncool is now embraced. Great post!

Thank you! (I want to know what kind of weird collabs TMBG would do. Furnace company? Light switch plates? )

I honestly feel that they would collab with a product line that is largely a waste of time to use and not very useful. Like if there was a device for manually rewinding a cassette or VHS. Or record player that only plays vinyl in reverse so that you can play that in reverse and hear the actual song but with the weird backwards record sound.

Hard for me to relate but I always enjoy the “tongue in cheek” writing ..( more dating of myself there)..I think it’s hard for any music fan to see their idols doing stuff that makes them cringe a bit but life is not stuck in one time ( though lots of music fans..ie, Woodstock folk) think it is..money comes and money goes ( Billy Joel) we all gotta feed someone..or feed your head ( sorry, couldn’t resist) thanks for a fun read.

Dave, there was a big article in the NYT a few weeks ago about how much fan merch Billy Joel sells!

No doubt..there are very few gold plated heroes left out there..

I was a thrash metal chick back in the day (I completely missed grunge, lol), and have fond memories of how “outsider” that was. Would never have imagined that Slayer would collab on stuff like this! Very much enjoyed this article, thanks for the flashbacks!

I think you either were metal or grunge at the time. Thank you for reading!!

A Keurig + Green Day merch match? I'm having one of those, "living in someone else's simulation moments."

The Green Day Keurig machine took me OUT earlier this week when their promo email popped into my inbox. I was a diehard Green Day fan in high school (East Bay /Contra Costa County represent) and still love them. I won't go so far as to buy that though 😅
