Sending this to my Gen Z daughter who might be interested in tufting!
Also, thoughts and prayers to those of you still watching AJLT, I left after the first season. Still like the memes and the headlines of the terrible reviews, though.
This just brought me WAY back- I remember latch hooking as a kid while my mom crocheted, although for the life of me I cannot remember what the designs were. I just remember it felt very satisfying to make those knots! As an aside, that boar is how I feel ever time I turn on the news…🤯
Oh my gosh, you totally took me back, Cheryl! I completed (yes, totally bragging) a latch kit when I was 13-14 (so 81-82) that my mom made into a pillow for me! I loved doing it, but my first love was always crocheting. I free-form it and once made a full Barbie wardrobe, down to a wedding gown, coats, purses…everything! My two young nieces were astounded by their gift.
Ugh, Keanu, I feel you- damned rugs, always tripping us!
Ooh this is fascinating, and makes so much sense (we never had latch hooking over here, but I wish we did! But please see my disastrous attempts with a Knitting Nancy?!) 🧶 That Andrew McCarthy post! And yay for Rick! It seems like we’re never going to run around and deserttttt him. 🫠
I asked my mom to buy me a panda rug latch hook kit and typical of child me, I lost interest after doing a couple legs maybe. (Probably wanted to watch TV.) She finished it and we had it in our house until they moved. I wonder if it’s sitting in some thrift store today. She did a good job!
How strange: When I read this, it unlocked a memory of having this kit (panda included!). And I also didn't finish it :D But in general, I've always wished I was more crafty--knitting looks so peaceful to me. Maybe it's time to retry latch hooking!
I swear I made that same mushroom rug to put on a pillow back in the day. I remember making latch hook rug bath mats for my grandmas as gifts. My mom helped me sew decorative towels on the back of the rugs to absorb water.
A friend gave me a rainbow latch hook kit for my birthday when I was a kid and I loved it! I guess I was also ahead of the resurgence curve because I got into a real crafty phase around 2010 or so and found a skull and crossbones latch hook kit browsing Joanne Fabrics. I made it into a pillow with black and white tiger stripe backing. Subsequently made pillows for friends out of old scarves, t-shirts, etc. with wild backings and fringe (pillow are SO expensive! and not that hard to make!). I bought a pirate ship kit during covid that I'm still working on in starts and stops because it is big and complex. Definitely off to look up tufting studios in my town!
The continual looping is SO therapeutic and fun. And yes why are pillows so expensive?? I hope the tufting journey works out for you. It’s different from latching but a lot more design possibility

My kids want to learn how to tuft! And I feel like I am duty bound to finish AJLT. I’m actually hoping it doesn’t get renewed!

Ha yes I should just hang the boar over my tv every time something ludicrous comes on

Awesome article as always! Thank you!💕
Crafting is fun and I wish I had some talent for it. Crocheted Barbie purse sounds incredible!!!

Knitting Nancy?!?!?! Ahahahahah. Also I love that Rick is so gracious about it all
😂 yes to all of the above!

Omg — it looked like this but a panda! https://www.pinterest.com/pin/vintage-sultana-latch-hook-rug-kit-79222-polar-bear-rug--94153448444271745/!

Omg I am going to hunt for this panda now. Knitting is so hard! I’m not crafty either but that repetitive motion is so soothing
Omg did we start but never finish the same one?!
I will def keep an eye out for it in my wanderings!! 🐼
I would buy it back!
THAT KERMIT RUG! You are taking me back to my first childhood bedroom theme. Kermit is never not in style.
He fits into any design

Classic latch hook use case!!!!! Honestly I want to make more but what the heck do I do with them then?
