This post is so money baby. It’s so money it doesn’t even know it’s money. 🤌 As one who lived in Los Feliz during the filming and cultural fallout from Swingers, I loved your inclusion of it here.
As an ‘80s band geek, I liked and appreciated Big Bad Voodoo Daddy when they broke out. Horns! I wore out The Swingers soundtrack, but I never bought any of those neo-swing bands’ albums. Swing was only good in small doses! That Decoder Ring podcast episode provided great historical context to why it exploded and fizzled. Thanks!
I'm not a big podcast listener but Decoder Ring sounds fascinating, thanks for that rec!
I went back and read the nostalgia concerts/band tees article and it has so much useful advice! I never listened to Depeche Mode when I was young (elder Millennial band kid here) but got seriously into them (and also weirdly, Oingo Boingo) during Covid. Their sold out Memento Mori tour started where I live and the crowd was so young! There were clearly folks there with shirts they had gotten on tours from the 90s but also So. Many. Youths. I love their new album and appreciate how cross-cultural and diverse the crowd was, but, interestingly, not what I would really call a nostalgia tour.
I’m sad I missed that tour. DM is my favorite band, hands down. I’ll def watch the concert documentary when it comes out! I’ve seen some bands that haven’t released any new music in years and played their most popular albums in order, and that was the show. (To be fair, I love that too) I’m happy that Depeche still has a drive to create!
Strong recommend if they tour again, I will have to keep an eye out for the documentary! They did a lot of the new album which is so good and I love a mix of new and older stuff at a show. It's hard to complain when they play the hits but they have such a deep catalogue of songs I want to hear that I'll take what I can get.
Thank you for reading the stories from last year! I came to Depeche Mode a little later in college because they’re such a seminal group for Asian Americans (Erasure and New Order, too) — so yeah how they resonate with different groups of people is super interesting! They talk about that a bit in the One Song “People are People” episode too. I also love that they’re multigenerational today!
I had no idea they were considered a seminal group for Asian Americans, that's so fascinating. It was probably the most diverse crowd I've ever seen at a rock show. I'll have to add that podcast to the list too, thanks!
Downloaded, thank you! And I am unable to not click on a past article if it's linked in a current one, but I always feel weird commenting on stuff that's from like, last July.
Love the podcast recs. Nothing to do with Gen X, but if you haven’t heard Normal Gossip do yourselves a favor and run to download these episodes: Righteous Lesbian Energy with Samantha Irby, Grandma’s “Best Friend” Dot with Danielle Henderson, and Steampunk-Ass Murder Mystery with Tuck Woodstock - this is the starter pack I make all my friends and family listen to to get them hooked and it WORKS!
Also - random but on the “I am bad at new music” front - same, girl. But also may I please HIGHLY recommend you add New Bands for Old Heads substack to your feed? Gabby is the guide you need to add new things to your playlists, truly a genius. She also has EXCELLENT playlists on all the major platforms - I especially love the decades ones for 70’s, 80s, and 90s, PLUS the Witchy Disco is a great time. And she’s always adding new ones!
Thank you for the recs and will check these out! I have read New Bands for Old Heads because that is me! I should check out her playlists, too. Thank you for reading!!💕
We are on the same page for sure. I LOVE Normal Gossip. The orchid ep was also incredible. (And yessss I am actually talking to Gabbie soon for a story about exactly that topic. She’s great)
FANTASTIC news!!!! 🎉🥂🍾 what a wonderful way to mark one year of WNVM fabulousness!! So excited for all that’s to come, this was like a summer special – bookmarking all these pods 🎧 (Amy Poehler’s looks 🌟) (also, Cheryl and all the “yapping” 😂!) HUGE congratulations!! 🥳 💗
Thank you!! And hugs for being the most supportive over here and I’m so happy Substack brought us together!💕 lol I love yappy podcasts. I need Graham to start one up again!!

Wow I would listen to/read the hell out of an oral history on all of that!!!!
It's a date! Also, long live Marty & Elaine.
Omg me too! I loved that movie.
Like Mr. Maron, I'm a 61-year-old Gen-Xer, and I will die on that hill.
Please join us! And Marc, too! Like the great Aaliyah said, age ain’t nothing but a number.
You are welcome in the big Gen X tent! (We also accept elder millennials if they self-select us)
I… can’t stand listening to people talking. I’d much rather read the transcript! Podcasts are just not for me. 🤷🏻♀️
Happy Newsletter Birthday!
Lolol I understand. I’m like that with voice notes and just want to read the message. Thank you!!💕
I hear you. I used to not be a fan and then it just clicked and I need all my fake AirPod friends now🤪
Happy one year of WNVM and the big. (huge!) news!!
Thank you!! And thank you for being so supportive!❤️
THANK YOU!

I should probably listen to it since I missed that entire trend!
Please do a WNVM podcast! 🙏
But then we’d be 2 people yapping and not sure Cheryl would be into it 😂
Ok but our yapping would obviously be extremely engaging!!
😂😂😂
Haha 😂 I thought about that! Maybe one day she will reconsider! 😉

That is so interesting! A lot of my friends reallly liked them in high school. I was deeply into 50’s-60’s music but did like them enough.

It’s a super fascinating listen and they break down the layers of the song, too!
